AUCD advocates for a number of legislative issues that are critical to individuals with disabilities and their families. Legislative priority issues are developed bi-annually by the AUCD Legislative Affairs Committee and Board of Directors. Priority issues are based on the Association's vision and mission as well as input from the entire Network, including individuals with disabilities and their families.

AUCD Strongly Opposes Decision to Let Electric Shock Treatments Continue

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) stands with many other national disability organizations in strongly opposing the recent decision by a Probate and Family Court judge to allow a school in Canton, Massachusetts, to continue administering electric shocks to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The direct support workforce is crucial in providing daily supports to people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities in the U.S. as they live and participate in their communities. While demand for these supports has never been higher and will continue to grow, significant challenges exist in finding, keeping, and training Direct Support Professionals.

Joint Report: AUCD and NDSC

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC) released a comprehensive report "Addressing the Policy Tangle: Students with Intellectual Disability and the Path to Postsecondary Education, Employment and Community Living" on implementation problems with using federal IDEA and vocational rehabilitation (VR) funding for postsecondary students with intellectual disabilities (ID).

VT LEND Awarded Green Mountain Self-Advocates Ally of the Year Award

Green Mountain Self-Advocates (GMSA), Vermont's state wide self-advocacy organization, awarded the 2018 Ally of the Year Award to the Vermont Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program (VT LEND) for their outstanding support of Vermont self-advocates, the mission of self-advocacy, and Green Mountain Self-Advocates. The award was presented at the 20th Annual Voices and Choices Conference on May 15, 2018 with the following statement: "VT LEND is dedicated to inclusion and making sure people from diverse language and cultural backgrounds, including people with disabilities, are part of the VT LEND training program.

Pavithran Named Policy Director at Center for Persons with Disabilities (UT UCEDD)

The Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University has appointed Sachin Pavithran as its policy director, effective July 1. The center has been involved in policy issues since its inception in the early 1970s, when it secured funding to educate children with developmental disabilities. At the time, schools were turning children with disabilities away. While issues have come and gone, Pavithran said it's important for the CPD to continue giving people with disabilities a voice in public policy. The CPD will bring a data-driven approach to advocacy for civil rights and inclusion at all levels of society.

Grassroots Advocacy Strategies in the State of Maine (ME LEND)

The Maine LEND Program hosted an Advocacy and Strategy Forum on April 27, 2018, in Lewiston, Maine. LEND Trainee, Kim Humphrey, a public health advocate, founder of Community Connect ME, and mother of a child with autism, led the charge with key decision makers who work with and/or have children with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) in the state. State Senator Shenna Bellows and former Maine State Legislator Peter Stuckey led one key aspect of the Strategy Forum. Speakers and presenters also included University of Maine professor and Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies Director, Alan Cobo-Lewis; LEND trainee and occupational therapist, Taylor Cahill;LEND trainee and family member, Sanaa Abduljabbar; Coordinator of Education and Autism for the Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies, Alan Kurtz. There were approximately 40 leaders and advocates in attendance.

AUCD Welcomes Public Policy Intern Jillian Odom

Jillian Odom is recently graduated from American University's Master's International program with a MA in Public Anthropology. Through this program she spent two and a half years in The Gambia, West Africa working with deaf populations as a Health Extension Volunteer with the United States Peace Corps. Though her main project was developing a mobile communication resource, it was this experience that allowed her to witness the importance of productive, innovative, human-centered disability policy and effective implementation strategies.

2018 Congressional Autism Caucus

Learn about the members of the Autism Caucus, which was founded by Representatives Mike Doyle (PA) and Chris Smith (NJ) who also Co-Chair the Coalition for Autism Research and Education ("CARE" or "Autism Caucus"), the first-ever Congressional Membership Organization dedicated to autism advocacy on Capitol Hill.

 
 

AUCD Summary of the Senate Appropriations Committee

L-HHS-ED Bill for FY 2018

On September 7, the Senate Appropriations Committee completed its mark-up of the FY 2018 Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill and voted to report out the bill by a vote of 31-1 with Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla) casting the sole "nay" vote. The House Appropriations Committee completed its work on July 19 (see links to bill and summary). Attached is a summary of how the bill impacts the AUCD network and other priorities of the disability community, along with a detailed table comparing the House and Senate bills with the President�s budget and FY 2017.

Senate Accessibility Manual

In recognition of the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Senator Mike Enzi (WY) published an updated version of his Accessibility Manual - a comprehensive guide to providing Senate offices and constituents with valuable information on accessibility throughout the US Capitol Complex.

This manual includes a variety of ideas and suggestions to help address the needs of staff, constituents, and visitors with accessibility needs, including: basic rules of etiquette; locations of accessible routes and entrances; accessible room design; and emergency evacuation procedures.

Please feel free to use this manual as you develop policies and procedures for accommodating individuals with accessibility needs, whether they are visiting our nation's capital or working in a Congressional office.
